ZINC PHOSPHATE CEMENT

Zinc phospate is the oldest of luting cements and thus serves as a standard with which newer cements can be compared.


CLASSIFICATION:-

  1. TYPE 1: Fine grained for luting (film thickness 25μm or less)
  2. TYPE 2: Medium grain for luting and filling.( film thickness not more than 40 μm)

MODE OF SUPPLY:-

Available as:-

  1. Powder and liquid system
  2. Capsules of pre- proportional powder and liquid

COMPOSITION:-


APPLICATIONS:-

  1. Luting of restorations( inlays, crowns, fixed dental prosthesis, etc)
  2. High strength bases
  3. Temporary restorations
  4. Luting of orthodontic bands and brackets

SETTING REACTION:-

When powder mixed with liquid:

1. PHOSPHARIC ACID + ZINC OXIDE = ACID ZINC PHOSPHATE
2.  ACID ZINC PHOSPHATE + ALUMINIUM PHOSPHATE
  
ZINC ALUMINOPHOSPHATE GEL.

SETTING TIME:-     2.5 to 8 mins

ADVANTAGES:-

  1. Long  track  record  with  proven  reliability
  2. Good compressive strength                             

DISADVANTAGES:-

  1. Pulp irritation.
  2. No chemical adhesion.
  3. No anticariogenic property
  4. Poor esthetics
