Periosteal Elevator

  • Double ended instrument.
  • One end is narrower, tapering and had a pointed tip which has slight curvature.
  • Other end is broad, spatulate and slightly curved. The edge of end is sharp.
  • Handle is serrated and cylindrical.

Uses

  • Narrow end used for reflecting interdental papilla before extraction. The curvature should face the tooth else chances of tearing the gingiva.
  • Spatulate end used to reflect mucoperiosteal flaps.
  • Also used for retraction of mucoperiosteal flaps for better visibilty.
  • Spatulate end may be used to remove cyst lining from bony cavity.
