Tracheostomy - Complications:


1) Intraoperative complications:
  • Haemorrhage
  • Injury to paratracheal structures
  • Carotid artery
  • Recurrent Laryngeal nerve
  • Oesophagus
  • Damage to trachea
 


2) Early postoperative complications:

  • Apnoea caused by fall in PCO2
  • Haemorrhage
  • Subcutaneous eymphysema, pneumo mediastinum,
  • Pneumothorax
  • Infection
  • Swallowing dysfunction
 


3) Late postoperative complications:

  • Difficult decanulation
  • Tracheocutaneous fistula
  • Tracheooesophageal fistula
  • Tracheoirnominate arterial fistula with severe
  • Haemorrhage
  • Tracheal stenosis
