Chemical Properties of Enamel

The enamel consists of 96% of inorganic and 4% organic substances and water.

The enamel matrix mineralization begins immediately after it is secreted. The inorganic portion of enamel is basically apatite having calcium and phosphate in a ratio of 2:1.

The inorganic content of enamel is crystalline calcium phosphate i.e. hydroxyapatite.

The chemical analysis of matrix of mature enamel indicates amino acid composition, proteins can be isolated in several different fractions, and they contain generally high percentage of serine, glutamic acid and glycine.
