Physical Properties of Enamel

Color: The color of enamel covering the crown ranges from yellowish white to grayish white.

Thickness: On the cusps of human molars and premolars attain a maximum thickness of about 2-2.5mm.

Hardness: The structure and hardness of enamel render it brittle. Enamel has hardness of about 350 KHN.

Because of its high content of mineral salts and their crystalline arrangement enamel is highly calcified tissue in the body.

The specific gravity of enamel is 2.8.

Permeability: The enamel can act like a semi permeable membrane, permitting complete or partial passage of certain molecules.
