Nasmyth's Membrane / Enamel Cuticle
- Nasmyth's membrane or primary enamel cuticle covers the entire crown of newly erupted teeth.
- Soon it is lost due to masticatory and mechanical forces.
- It is typical basal lamina secreted by ameloblasts after forming enamel.
- It is visible under light microscope because of its wavy course
- The surface of enamel of an erupted tooth is covered by a pellicle which is a precipitate of salivary proteins.
- It readily reappears even after a tooth is mechanically polished. Dental plaque readily forms over the pellicles.
