A restorative material is a material which substitutes the missing tooth structure and restores the form and function of the tooth.

Restorative materials can be broadly classified into Aesthetic (Tooth Colored) and Non-Aesthetic.

1. Aesthetic properties

Material should match the color of the tooth. It should have different shades of to match the tooth color.


2. Chemically stable

Material should not dissolve or react to saliva or other chemicals like aerated drinks which are ingested by patient.


3. Biologically compatible

The material should be tasteless, odorless, non toxic, non irritating to the oral tissues. The material must be impermeable to oral fluids.


4. Easily Manipulated

The procedure to manipulate the material should not be complex. The material should be acceptable to the human body and no toxic fumes should be produced. It should be easy to mix, insert, shape and cure. It should be easy to polish and repair.


5. Economic

The processing method should be low cost and not require expensive instrument/equipment.


6. Physical property should be good

The material should have adequate strength. It should be resistant to impact forces which are incurred while chewing/biting. The material should be dimensionally stable under all temperature changes and varying stresses. The material should have low specific gravity and weight.
